On Saturday, October 19, 2024, UNESCO will welcome for her ‘Speech for History‘, Dr. Jane Goodall to honor the Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace.
World-renowned as an ethologist for her work on chimpanzees, an icon of animal protection and a leading environmental activist, on the eve of her 90th birthday she will deliver a message of peace, respect and hope, as Nelson Mandela, Pope John Paul II and Claude Lévi-Strauss did before her.
In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute.The Jane Goodall Institute is a global, community-driven conservation organization founded in 1977 that advances the vision and work of Dr. Jane Goodall. By understanding, protecting and improving the welfare of chimpanzees and other African wildlife, while inspiring action to conserve the natural world we all share, we improve the lives of people, other animals, and the environment.

From September 21st, International Day of Peace, to October 20th 2024, the day after Jane Goodall’s conference at UNESCO, a photo exhibition on the life of Jane Goodall and the work of the Jane Goodall Institute will be on display on the UNESCO gates.

A prestigious audience
This unique event will bring together a hundred of ambassadors, activists from across Europe, environmental and animal protection NGOs, renowned scientists and engaged youth from the Jane Goodall Institute. French and international officials will also be present. The conference will also bring together renowned activists along with European figures including representatives from Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Turkey, as well as participants from Africa and Oceania. NGOs dedicated to animal protection, nature conservation, and support for vulnerable populations will also be present, along with committed businesses and partner cities like Le Vésinet, Bordeaux, and Ville d’Avray, accompanied by young eco-delegates and junior municipal councilors.
Engaged personalities such as Pascal Picq, Frédéric Lopez, Léo Urban, Aurélia Thierrée, and Maurice Barthélémy, ambassadors of the Jane Goodall Institute France, along with figures like Natalie Portman, will lend their support. The conference will also be attended by over 100 journalists and influencers, including French, European, and Anglo-Saxon media.
This prestigious gathering honors this Messenger of Peace, an icon of animal protection and environmental activism for over six decades.
Inauguration of the Jane Goodall rose in UNESCO’s garden
During her visit to UNESCO, Jane Goodall will be inaugurating the ‘Jane Goodall’ rosebush alongside the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay. The rose will be planted in the UNESCO garden, symbolising the ongoing commitment to peace and environmental protection of this United Nations Messenger of Peace.
The creation of an exceptional rose for an exceptional woman…
It takes eight years of work to create a new variety of rose. The ‘Rosa Jane Goodall’®, created by Christian Hanak, is no exception to the rule. It’s a delicate marriage of two contemporary flowers from previous creations.
Variety name: Rosa Jane Goodall – Eternal Rose of Universal Peace

There are only four rose breeders in France, the creators of new varieties of flowers. For thirty years, Christian Hanak has been creating roses in his gardens in Granville and Regnéville sur-Mer.
Dr Jane Goodall is a United Nations Messenger of Peace. So it was only natural that this rose, was chosen to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of Normandy in 2024.
This rose can also be found in symbolic places such as the Louvre (Paris), the Basilica of Vézelay, on the Île Chausey at Mont-Saint-Michel and at Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s GoodPlanet Foundation.
Finding this rose in the UNESCO garden is therefore a powerful symbol.
